What is “defiant hope?” At Love146 we choose to hope as an act of defiance in the face of violence and horrific abuse. Children are our teachers. We are undeterred by despair and cynicism. Our hope is an insistence that every step is worth it. As our CEO & Co-founder Rob shares: “Some people tell me I’m optimistic, but I don’t think that’s what it is. I know too much and I’ve seen too much to be optimistic. Here, we choose to use the term ‘defiant hope. Where optimism is often passive, defiant hope is the opposite — it requires action. When defiance is connected to hope, it means seeing the horrific things happening in the world, like child trafficking and exploitation, but insisting it can change, potentially, even, by our action. The best example of defiant hope is seen directly through the children Love146 works with every day. When these kids choose to wake up and live another day, that’s an act of defiant hope. I can’t promise them with integrity that everything will be okay, but as long as they want us on the journey with them, we will be there persevering alongside them.”
